Newest surgery craze: elf ears
Some people are taking a current fad to surgical levels.
A recent column in AARP, The Magazine for readers over 50, talks about the new trend where body-modification artists cut the “tops of young people’s ears and sew them back together in a pointed shape.”
“These are inherently unsafe procedures and doing it in a tattoo parlor quadruples that potential risk,” says Dr. Praful Ramineni, a plastic surgeon at Washington Hospital Center.
Even those that get away without an infection are stuck with their pointy ears unless they’re willing to go through several surgeries in a hospital.
The procedure removes cartilage so it’s not easily reversible.
